Never throw in the direction of people or animals. Always ensure there are no delicate objects near the target. The knives are intended only for throwing at a suitable target. Smaller throwing knives (under 10 inches and not heavy) can be effectively thrown at regular dartboards. For larger and heavier competition knives, a proper wooden target is recommended. Several layers of cardboard can also serve as an excellent target. Be aware that steel can bounce off steel and other hard surfaces.
